Atari and Activision Partner to Revive Classic Video Games

Atari, a prominent name in the video game industry, is revisiting its classic 1980s titles as the gaming landscape shifts towards digital platforms. At the recent Gamescom event in Germany, Atari Interactive disclosed a partnership with Activision to reintroduce 39 early titles from Activision’s library on physical cartridges, including popular games like Pitfall, River Raid, and Megamania.

The games are playable on the Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original 2600 console from 1977. This updated console supports wireless controllers and can be connected to modern TVs via HDMI. Launched in 2023, the 2600+ also features reissues of beloved games such as Pac-Man, Galaga, and Dig Dug, and is compatible with original cartridges from the Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles.

According to Mike Mika, studio head at Digital Eclipse, the enduring appeal of these games is evident as enthusiasts continue to seek out and enjoy these nostalgic titles. He emphasized the significance of the collaboration with Activision, highlighting a reunion with a historical connection dating back more than 40 years when former Atari developers founded Activision in 1979 due to differences with Atari’s developer policies.

Now under Microsoft’s ownership as part of Activision Blizzard, the studio is renowned for franchises like Call of Duty and Candy Crush Saga. The revival of these classic games marks a significant milestone for Atari, as it seeks to reclaim its legacy in the gaming industry.

Atari’s journey has been marked by various ownership changes over the years, with the brand now being held by Atari SA based in Luxembourg. Recent efforts led by CEO Wade Rosen have focused on returning Atari to its retro gaming roots, emphasizing the company’s heritage and rebuilding its reputation among loyal fans who have cherished Atari games for decades.

The brand’s dedication to preserving its legacy includes collaborations with original Atari artists like Hiro Kimura, who contributed to the artwork for the 2025 re-release of Pac-Man on the 2600+. Atari’s commitment to authenticity extends to recreating fabric patches that were originally offered by Activision as incentives for players in the past.

While Atari’s retro releases cater to a niche audience in the gaming market, the resurgence of interest in physical media presents an opportunity for the brand. In a gaming landscape increasingly dominated by digital downloads, Atari’s focus on traditional cartridges, complete with original packaging and extras like patches, resonates with enthusiasts who value tangible gaming experiences.

As physical media gains renewed appreciation among gamers, the allure of Atari’s classic titles packaged in familiar cartridges and accompanied by nostalgic elements like box art and manuals continues to captivate both longtime fans and a new generation of gamers.
