“Dawn the Marmot Wins Inaugural Fat Marmot Week”

Gothic, Colo. – A yellow-bellied marmot named Dawn emerged as the winner of the first-ever Fat Marmot Week organized by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Dawn, known for fathering numerous baby marmots and indulging in licking salt and minerals off rocks, impressively doubled his weight from 2.5 to 5.9 kilograms over the summer.

Katie Adler, the organizer of Fat Marmot Week, expressed pride in Dawn’s victory, highlighting his unique trait of enjoying eating rocks. As the reigning champion, Dawn now represents the Marmot Project, a crucial research initiative facing uncertain future prospects due to funding challenges in the U.S.

The Marmot Project, a long-term study of yellow-bellied marmots based at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, began in 1962 and has been pivotal in understanding wildlife adaptations to environmental changes. However, recent budget cuts threaten its continuity, with significant reductions in research funding impacting essential operations and staffing.

To raise awareness and secure financial support, the Marmot Project initiated innovative campaigns such as OnlyMarms on OnlyFans, a platform typically known for explicit content. Despite successfully garnering over $120,000 in donations, the project acknowledges the need for sustainable funding sources to ensure continued research efforts.

In response to the funding challenges, the Marmot Project has launched a petition urging U.S. Congress to reverse the cuts and safeguard scientific research. While these initiatives have seen some success, long-term stability remains a pressing concern for the project’s future endeavors.

Looking ahead, the Marmot Project plans to organize the next Fat Marmot Week in 2027, aiming to engage the public in appreciating and supporting marmot conservation efforts. Adler emphasized the resilience of marmots, noting their ability to endure harsh conditions and their importance in maintaining ecological balance.

As the Marmot Project perseveres in its scientific pursuits, researchers hope that their work will continue to inspire admiration and respect for these remarkable creatures among the public.
