The Minnesota Frost have secured captain Kendall Coyne Schofield for the next two seasons by re-signing her to a new contract. This move dispels any doubts about the 34-year-old potentially taking a break following her contribution to the United States’ Olympic gold medal victory in February.
With Coyne Schofield back on board, the Frost will maintain their veteran leadership core heading into their fourth season. This core has been pivotal since clinching the PWHL’s first two Walter Cup titles in 2024 and ’25, alongside alternate captains Lee Stecklein and Kelly Pannek.
Expressing excitement about the upcoming seasons, Coyne Schofield affirmed her commitment to striving for another Walter Cup triumph in Minnesota. Hailing from Chicago, she boasts an impressive sporting resume as a four-time Olympian and two-time Olympic gold medalist. Additionally, she played a crucial role in the establishment of the PWHL during negotiations back in the summer of 2023.
During the previous season, Coyne Schofield amassed 12 goals and 23 points across 23 games, despite missing seven matches due to an upper-body injury sustained at the Milan-Cortina Games. Her overall tally of 63 points (30 goals, 33 assists) in 77 career PWHL games ranks third in the league’s records.
Initially among the Frost’s foundational players, Coyne Schofield’s future with the team was uncertain as she remained unsigned, making her vulnerable during the PWHL’s expansion process in June. However, her return now fortifies the Frost, who have inked contracts with a total of 17 players, including eight key members from their previous cup-winning squads.
Despite finishing third in the standings last season, the Frost encountered elimination in a decisive Game 5 of the semifinals against eventual champions Montreal.
