CIA Chief Ratcliffe Makes Secretive Moscow Trip

CIA chief John Ratcliffe embarked on a trip to Moscow to engage in discussions with Russian officials, as reported by various U.S. media sources. This visit marks the first publicized trip by a U.S. intelligence head to the Russian capital since Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in November 2021, preceding Moscow’s subsequent invasion of Ukraine.

Reportedly, John Ratcliffe, who previously served as the Director of National Intelligence during President Trump’s first term, undertook this secretive journey; however, the specific agenda and participants of the talks remain undisclosed. Multiple news outlets, including CBS News, Axios, ABC News, CNN, and the Wall Street Journal, confirmed the occurrence of the meeting.

While the CIA chose not to comment on the matter, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov neither confirmed nor denied the reports, stating that Putin had no scheduled meeting with Ratcliffe. Additionally, a source revealed that the U.S. requested Ukraine to refrain from conducting airstrikes near Moscow, St. Petersburg, and certain northern Russian territories to facilitate the safe transit of a high-ranking U.S. official to Moscow.

Regarding the absence of a U.S. ambassador to Russia, despite the strong partnership between Russia and Iran, which involves significant military, economic, and diplomatic connections, the U.S. administration issued warnings against countries maintaining business ties with Iran to avoid secondary sanctions. This move aims to intensify economic pressure in alignment with the ongoing U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran initiated in February.

Tehran’s provision of drones to Moscow for its conflict in Ukraine was highlighted, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accusing Russia of reciprocating by supplying similar drones to Iran. Reports also indicated Russia’s alleged support to Iran with satellite imagery for targeting U.S. facilities in the Middle East, a claim vehemently denied by Moscow, which expressed readiness to assist in resolving the U.S.-Iran discord.
