“Arrest Made in Fort Smith ‘Mass Shooting’ Case”

Authorities have apprehended the individual responsible for what the RCMP has labeled a “mass shooting” in Fort Smith, N.W.T., over the weekend. The arrest took place without any complications around 4:30 a.m. MT on Sunday, as confirmed by the police. Pending further inquiries, charges are expected to be filed against the suspect. This individual now joins two other individuals of interest who were detained on Saturday.

Mayor Dana Fergusson expressed a sense of relief upon hearing the news. “It’s one more bad actor removed from the community,” she remarked on Sunday. “The apprehension of that individual provides a sense of security to the residents.”

    Mayor Witnesses Events

Besides serving as the mayor of Fort Smith, Dana Fergusson happens to be the proprietor of the bar where the shooting transpired and was an eyewitness to the incident. The altercation that led to gunfire and three individuals being wounded occurred outside Dirty O’Fergies bar as the Fireweed Festival’s inaugural event concluded. Subsequently, the community was placed under lockdown, with a shelter-in-place directive in effect for over 13 hours.

Fergusson was present in the parking lot at the time of the shooting and rendered aid to the victims before assisting others to safety until emergency services arrived.

The identities of the victims and the specifics of their injuries have not been disclosed yet. However, Fergusson mentioned that they were evacuated for medical treatment outside the community.

“From my understanding, those affected are on the path to recovery, supported by their families during this trying time,” she commented. “Their loved ones are standing by them every step of the way.”

The law enforcement presence significantly increased, with reinforcements arriving from Yellowknife and Yukon to aid in the suspect’s apprehension.

“The tireless efforts of our officers and specialized units were pivotal in resolving this situation. We are dedicated to upholding Fort Smith’s safety,” stated RCMP Inspector James Lai in a release on Sunday. “I extend my gratitude to the residents and local leadership for their ongoing cooperation and patience.”
