Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta, has experienced a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American TV show. The mention on the Golden Globe-winning medical drama series, “The Pitt,” has sparked curiosity among viewers.

In a recent episode, Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by actor Noah Wyle, announces his sabbatical trip to the landmark located in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The site, situated 150 kilometers south of Calgary, was historically used by Indigenous peoples to drive bison herds over an 11-meter cliff for harvesting.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing head at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, mentioned that the show had prompted an increase in visitor interest, with many citing the TV mention as their reason for exploring the site. The center’s interpretive displays delve into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, leading visitors on a trail atop the cliff.

The site, designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe expressed optimism that the recent uptick in interest will lead to a boost in visitor numbers during the peak season from May to September, aided by promotions like discounts through the national Canada Strong Pass.

Additionally, Head-Smashed-In is part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, including Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, encouraging tourists to explore the region comprehensively. The provincial marketing agency, Travel Alberta, capitalized on the TV show’s mention by releasing a promotional video featuring the characters against the backdrop of the buffalo jump cliffs.

Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir also shared the TV clip on social media, highlighting the global recognition of Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks. The site’s management anticipates continued interest and hopes for a successful summer season with increased footfall and tour bookings.
