U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that both U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney would receive “options” after trade discussions between Canadian and U.S. trade officials on Thursday. Greer highlighted that the negotiations progress from the Trump administration’s viewpoint.
In an exclusive interview with CBC News following the talks, Greer described the meetings as “good” and “cordial.” He mentioned that discussions and options would be presented to the president and prime minister.
Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, after the meeting, stated that he would continue fulfilling Canadians’ expectations. He did not specify the number of upcoming meetings with Greer, emphasizing that they would have as many as necessary.
Additionally, LeBlanc is set to update the federal government’s Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations on the negotiation progress. This committee strategizes Canada’s approach to its economic ties with the U.S.
LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette met with Greer for the second time this week and the fourth in three weeks. Discussions intensified following Trump’s threat to impose 50% duties on numerous Canadian goods, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs.
Charette resumed discussions with her U.S. counterpart at the U.S. Trade Representative office after the meeting. The aim is to reach a potential trade deal proposal for presentation to President Trump before the tariff deadline.
Sources revealed that the Americans proposed reducing some sectoral tariffs on Tuesday, but not to the extent desired by the Canadian side. They are also seeking preferential access to Canadian critical minerals, security, and energy in the deal.
CBC News previously reported that LeBlanc and Greer intend to present Trump with a trade deal pathway by Monday. The Canadian side has emphasized that there would be no political support to continue talks if the Aug. 19 tariffs are implemented.
The Canadian side is prepared to address trade concerns, including ending alcohol bans and making adjustments in the automotive and dairy sectors. Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed willingness to reintroduce U.S. alcohol if a fair deal is reached to protect Ontario’s industries.
Ford highlighted that tariffs on Canada equate to taxes on American citizens. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette’s office also reinforced the stance of maintaining U.S. alcohol bans until a fair agreement is reached.
