A 64-year-old man from Quebec has achieved a significant medical milestone by becoming the first patient in North America to undergo a liver transplant using a regenerated liver. This breakthrough technology, known as Liver Assist, has the potential to increase the availability of transplantable livers by up to 24 within its initial year of implementation.
Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, battled liver issues for over 15 years, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Prior to his transplant surgery at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), Landry was informed by his doctor that his new liver had been regenerated using a novel machine.
Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, spearheaded the project and carried out Landry’s surgery. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates oxygen-rich fluid through the organ, aiding in reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation. This method allows doctors to evaluate the liver’s performance under conditions mimicking the human body.
The technology has shown promising results, with the potential to make a significant number of additional livers viable for transplantation each year. Dr. Hénault highlighted the positive impact this advancement could have on patients awaiting liver transplants, reducing complications and hospital stays.
Landry’s post-transplant progress has been remarkable, with initial blood work indicating a successful outcome. As he continues his recovery in Montreal, Landry eagerly anticipates returning to his hometown in Gaspésie to reunite with his family and horses. He hopes his experience will inspire conversations about organ donation, emphasizing the importance of donor availability in saving lives.
