Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to climb an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had shared on social media her decision to close her Pilates studio earlier this year to embark on a new journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a radiant presence who was deeply cherished by her loved ones and friends.
The search, which commenced on July 31 following the tragic incident on Broad Peak, led by the renowned climber Nirmal Purja, has now come to a close with Geis’s recovery. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier from Nepal, gained fame for conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks within a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, a feat documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” His record was surpassed in 2023.
Tragic accidents are not uncommon during climbing expeditions in the northern regions of Pakistan due to hazards like avalanches, falling ice and rocks, high altitudes, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
