“Toronto Sibling’s Caregiving Journey: Balancing Neurodiversity”

Simone Abrahamsohn from Toronto recounts her journey of becoming her elder brother’s primary caregiver following their mother’s passing. Balancing this new responsibility while fostering a harmonious living environment for two neurodivergent siblings presents its challenges. Stuart, her brother, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires specialized care including assistance with daily tasks, emotional support, and sensitivity to triggers like loud noises.

Growing up, Simone experienced difficulties with her brother’s autism, feeling embarrassed and misunderstood by others. She reflects on the lack of support available during her childhood compared to the resources accessible today. Despite their differences, Simone acknowledges her own struggles with ADHD and the need to adapt her behavior to maintain peace in their shared living space.

Overcoming past regrets, Simone now embraces her role as Stuart’s roommate, prioritizing his well-being over personal pursuits. Adjusting their routines, seeking external assistance, and fostering open communication have been crucial in establishing a supportive environment for both siblings. Through this experience, Simone finds redemption and a renewed commitment to being the best sibling she can be for Stuart.
