Following a “mass shooting incident” in Fort Smith that left three individuals injured, the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, and two individuals have been arrested. The RCMP mentioned that the incident may have been a targeted attack, but they are still investigating the connection of the arrested individuals to the event.
The police received reports of shots fired outside a local business around 2:12 a.m. in the community of Fort Smith. The incident occurred outside Dirty O’Fergies bar, coinciding with the conclusion of the Fireweed Festival’s opening event. The injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention, although their identities have not been disclosed.
Despite the initial chaos, the area is now considered safe for residents to resume normal activities, and there is no immediate danger to the community. Law enforcement agencies from the N.W.T. and the Yukon are collaborating with the RCMP to investigate the matter, utilizing various resources such as police dogs, aerial drones, and the major crimes unit.
A male suspect, described as having a heavy build, medium complexion, black hair, and facial hair, is at large. The public is advised not to approach the individual but instead contact the RCMP if spotted. While images of the suspect circulated online, the RCMP cautioned against relying on AI-generated visuals, emphasizing the accuracy of the images provided by the authorities.
To aid in the investigation, a community portal has been established for witnesses to submit digital evidence. Fort Smith Mayor Dana Fergusson urged the community to remain resilient in the face of this tragedy, emphasizing that this incident does not define the town or its residents.
