A Saskatchewan-based company is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting it from the ground on a commercial scale rather than relying on fossil fuel production. Regina-headquartered Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling on its third well at the Lawson Complex, an underground rock formation in southern Saskatchewan. The company aims to establish the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system as a new primary energy source.
Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial element in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, refining petroleum, and transitioning towards more sustainable energy sources. Natural hydrogen, which occurs organically, presents a greener alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods.
Hydrogen, a versatile gas that can serve as a clean fuel or power source for electricity generation, produces water as its sole byproduct without emitting greenhouse gases directly. The demand for hydrogen has been increasing as it is seen as a key solution to reduce emissions in sectors like transportation and steel manufacturing.
While most commercially available hydrogen is derived from fossil fuels, leading to significant carbon emissions, the production of green hydrogen using renewable energy sources is more environmentally friendly but costlier. Max Power’s exploration of natural hydrogen aims to leverage existing extraction techniques used for natural gas and helium to achieve cost-effective production.
