A peculiar phenomenon in the natural world, the narwhal tusk can grow up to three meters long and is an upper tooth that protrudes through the whale’s lip on the left side. It is distinctive for its perfectly straight growth, devoid of any curves.
An international team of researchers has unraveled the mystery behind the straight growth of the narwhal tusk, attributing it to its unique pattern of opposing spirals. Henrik Birkedal, a study author from Aarhus University in Denmark, expressed surprise at the discovery of two opposing spirals, one turning right and the other left.
Recent findings published in the journal Nature Communications shed light on how these opposing spirals enable the tusk to grow straight. The investigation originated when Birkedal collaborated with a colleague in organic chemistry to explore the directional tendencies of certain molecules. This led to a study on the spiraling nature of narwhal tusks, with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden joining forces to examine the underlying structure.
Through advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans, the researchers observed that narwhal tusks, predominantly found in male narwhals, consist of dentine and cementum, similar to human teeth but lacking enamel. Notably, the tusks exhibit two opposing spirals: a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed one in the inner dentine layer.
This groundbreaking discovery not only demystifies the straight growth of narwhal tusks but also holds promise in elucidating the structural principles of human bones and analogous cases. Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist at Harvard University, praised the comprehensive exploration of what he deems “the most extraordinary tooth on the planet.”
While acknowledging the multifunctional nature of teeth, Nweeia emphasized that his research has highlighted the primary sensory role of narwhal tusks, rather than serving defensive or feeding purposes. Moving forward, he advocates for further studies on narwhals during off-season periods and emphasizes the importance of collaborating with Indigenous communities to enrich scientific endeavors.
