Carney, departing from his usual diplomatic tone, criticized the U.S. for its approach to trade deals, suggesting that they sometimes finalize agreements hastily. He emphasized that while Canada’s government stands united, the same cannot be said for the Trump administration.
The prime minister disclosed that the U.S. had objections to Canada’s support for French culture, the presence of French-language media online, and the requirement for bilingual product labels in Canada. Carney firmly stated that these demands were unacceptable from the outset and reiterated that they were not up for negotiation.
Regarding the auto industry, Carney highlighted the U.S.’s unfair treatment of Canadian-made parts and the inconsistent application of tariffs on cars and pick-up trucks. These late demands, if accepted, would have negatively impacted vehicle production in Canada over time.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed support for Carney’s decision to halt negotiations, asserting that Canada is prepared to engage in a trade war with the U.S. and emerge victorious due to its unity and readiness for a confrontation.
Carney further criticized the U.S. team for attempting to undermine Canada’s sovereignty by introducing measures that would restrict the country’s ability to engage in other trade agreements globally. He emphasized that these attempts were unacceptable as Canada believes in free trade and values its partnerships with other nations.
The prime minister underscored the disruptive effect of the last-minute changes proposed by the U.S., which derailed months of negotiations that were heading towards a fair deal for Canadians. He confirmed that reciprocal tariffs on U.S. goods would be implemented following the breakdown of talks.
Carney expressed concerns about the potential job losses and economic impact resulting from the failed negotiations with the U.S. He assured that the government would support affected businesses and individuals beyond the current administration’s term.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre voiced disappointment over the imposition of tariffs by the U.S. and pledged to advocate for actions that protect Canadian industries. He emphasized the importance of pursuing tariff-free trade and indicated intentions to collaborate with Carney to safeguard Canadian workers and the economy.
Economist Trevor Tombe warned that the imposed tariffs could lead to significant job losses across Canada, with different provinces being affected to varying degrees. The federal Liberal government estimated that the tariffs would impact billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods and put thousands of jobs at risk.
Carney reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting affected businesses and individuals, pledging to release details of the support measures soon. He emphasized the need to safeguard Canada’s sovereignty and key industries in the face of trade challenges.
