A member of the Labour Party has announced his willingness to vacate his position for Andy Burnham to return to the House of Commons.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester has been frequently linked to a potential comeback to Westminster, and during the Labour party conference, he avoided answering questions about his aspirations to lead the party or become Prime Minister.

Now, Mr. Lewis, who recently suggested that the Prime Minister should resign, expressed his commitment to prioritize the party over personal ambitions when discussing potential successors to Keir Starmer.

During an appearance on Politics Live on BBC Two, the MP for Norwich South discussed the challenges surrounding a potential Labour leadership election, highlighting the importance of maintaining democratic legitimacy. When asked about Andy Burnham’s suitability for the role, Mr. Lewis indicated that they had discussed the matter and stated his willingness to step aside for him.

Mr. Lewis had previously advocated for Mr. Burnham’s return to the Labour Party and his ascension to the position of Prime Minister.

In a recent statement, Mr. Lewis criticized the ongoing situation with the Prime Minister, emphasizing the need for a resolution and suggesting that the Labour Party should consider bringing Andy Burnham back into the parliamentary Labour Party for a leadership role.

Responding to Mr. Lewis’s proposal on LBC, Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the offer as “peculiar” and stressed the importance of having talented individuals in leadership positions without taking voters for granted.
