Tragedy struck as a 14-year-old lost his life following a shooting incident involving several teenagers at a festive Christmas tree lighting event in the United States.
Mayhem broke out during Chicago’s official Christmas light ceremony on Friday evening when around 300 young individuals reportedly stormed the event, leading to multiple gunshots being fired. Subsequently, a second shooting incident was reported just moments later, and two individuals were found with gunshot wounds.
The 14-year-old boy sustained several gunshot injuries and was swiftly taken to the hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his wounds and was later declared deceased. Another male victim, aged 18, was also hospitalized due to a gunshot wound in the leg, causing serious harm. The shootings occurred around 10:40 pm.
Less than an hour earlier, at 9:50 pm, a large group reportedly descended on a sidewalk near the Chicago Theater, resulting in chaos. Law enforcement responded to gunshots being discharged, prompting the group to disperse. Seven individuals were found with gunshot wounds in the aftermath.
The victims, all between the ages of 13 and 17, were shot near the intersection of State and Randolph streets. Alderman Hopkins, representing the second ward district, highlighted that multiple police officers were also assaulted, with reports of mace and stun gun usage, leading to at least one officer being hospitalized.
A witness, Courtney Spinelli from WGNNews, recounted how a large group gathered on the streets and shots rang out near the Chicago Theatre. She confirmed that the youngest victim, a 13-year-old girl, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg but is in stable condition.
Linda Dixon, another witness, described the chaotic scene outside the Chicago Theatre, where people were seen running in panic. She expressed dismay at the incident happening during the holiday season, a time meant for celebration and enjoyment.
Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic events that unfolded.
