Lindsey Vonn has emotionally announced her discharge from the hospital after a serious leg injury sustained during the Winter Olympics. Vonn was airlifted to the hospital while participating in the downhill event in Italy, shortly after suffering an ACL injury.
Following multiple surgeries, the skiing icon was initially discharged from the hospital in Italy to return to the United States for further treatment. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Vonn disclosed the extent of her injuries, which included compartment syndrome and a broken ankle, and praised her surgeon for saving her leg from amputation.
“I had a complex tibia fracture, a fractured fibula head, and everything was in pieces due to compartment syndrome,” Vonn shared in a video on Instagram. She explained that compartment syndrome occurs when excessive blood accumulation crushes muscles, nerves, and tendons in a specific area of the body.
Vonn expressed gratitude towards her surgeon, Dr. Tom Hackett, for performing a fasciotomy that prevented the amputation of her leg. Despite a longer hospital stay than expected due to low hemoglobin levels from surgeries, Vonn received a blood transfusion that aided in her recovery.
Currently wheelchair-bound due to a broken ankle, Vonn remains optimistic about her rehabilitation journey. She plans to progress from a wheelchair to crutches in the coming weeks, with a potential timeline for a full recovery that might involve additional surgery in the future.
In a lengthy caption accompanying the video, Vonn detailed her injury, subsequent treatment, and outlined the long road to recovery ahead. She emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and expressed determination to overcome the challenges she faces.
Vonn’s message resonated hope and resilience as she thanked her medical team and supporters for their unwavering assistance throughout her ordeal.
