“Swap to Olive Oil: A Simple Solution for Arthritis Pain”

A health specialist has shared a simple daily dietary swap that could potentially alleviate arthritis discomfort by reducing inflammation associated with the condition.

Arthritis and similar joint issues are prevalent in the UK, affecting over 10 million individuals. These conditions manifest in various symptoms, including pain, inflammation, joint stiffness, and mobility challenges depending on the specific diagnosis.

During winter, these symptoms may intensify due to cold temperatures exacerbating pain sensitivity, impeding blood circulation, and triggering muscle spasms. While arthritis currently has no cure, there are strategies available to alleviate pain and mitigate associated symptoms.

Dr. Syed Nadeem Abbas, an expert in stem cell treatment for joint health, suggests that addressing arthritis pain can start with a simple adjustment in the kitchen. He recommends switching from regular cooking fats to extra-virgin olive oil as a practical step.

According to Dr. Abbas, the natural compound oleocanthal found in extra-virgin olive oil targets the same enzyme pathway as some common pain medications, thereby reducing inflammatory responses. While he emphasizes that it is not a cure or a replacement for prescribed care, using extra-virgin olive oil for cooking and salad dressings is a straightforward and sustainable change that many find beneficial.

In addition to extra-virgin olive oil, Dr. Abbas highlights several other dietary choices that have shown promising results. The Arthritis Foundation also endorses the use of olive oil due to its abundance of heart-healthy fats and oleocanthal, which exhibit properties similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

A study published in the Nutrients journal in 2017 observed the potential benefits of olive oil for osteoarthritis patients, suggesting its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects could help prevent cartilage damage. However, the authors noted the necessity for further research to substantiate these findings.

While some studies have indicated improvements in functional and pain scores among osteoarthritis patients using olive extract, both orally and topically, more evidence from well-designed clinical trials is required to fully support the use of olive supplements in treating osteoarthritis.

Common symptoms of arthritis include pain, inflammation, joint stiffness, and mobility limitations. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is advisable to consult your general practitioner for appropriate guidance and management.
