A teenage girl, Mary Vincent, bravely escaped from a horrifying abduction in Modesto, California, where she was kidnapped and mutilated by Lawrence Singleton, a former seaman. Vincent, who had run away from home, accepted a ride from Singleton, who later assaulted her and severed both her arms before abandoning her in a remote location in 1978.
Despite the traumatic ordeal, Vincent demonstrated incredible resilience by stopping the bleeding with dirt and crawling out of a ravine to seek help. She flagged down a passing car and was rescued, ultimately surviving the brutal attack. Vincent collaborated with authorities to bring Singleton to justice, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial where he was convicted of various charges including attempted murder and kidnapping.
Following his release from prison, Singleton’s actions resulted in another tragic incident in Tampa, Florida, where he murdered Roxanne Hayes. Vincent expressed disappointment that Singleton had been released, emphasizing the need for stricter measures to prevent such atrocities. Singleton was later sentenced to death but passed away from cancer in prison in 2001.
