A prominent figure in the media industry met a tragic end when he was buried alive in a 6ft box during a botched kidnapping attempt. Stephen Small, a well-known businessman with a prestigious background, fell victim to a plan orchestrated by a small-time drug dealer named Danny Edwards, who sought a ransom of $1 million.

Initially intending to take Small to a rural area and negotiate the ransom, the kidnapping plan took a deadly turn. Small, a 30-year-old heir to a significant fortune, was the son of Burrell L. Small, a prominent figure in the broadcasting industry. Edwards, masquerading as a police officer, successfully lured Small into his trap before demanding the ransom from Small’s wife, Nancy.

In a desperate move, Edwards buried Small in a cramped box in a forest in Kankakee, Illinois, equipped with minimal provisions to keep him alive. Additionally, Edwards coerced Nancy Rish, his terrified accomplice, into aiding him in the heinous crime through threats of violence against her son.

Despite being involved in the crime, Rish later received a reduced sentence in 2022 under a law change that recognized her as a victim of intimate partner violence. Edwards, initially sentenced to death for Small’s murder, had his punishment commuted to life imprisonment. Rish expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging her role in the tragic event and extending her deepest apologies to Small’s family.

Rish’s defense team argued that she had been coerced by Edwards, emphasizing the lasting impact of domestic violence on her actions. Following legal proceedings, Rish’s sentences for murder and kidnapping were reduced, and she was released on parole in February 2022.

The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the Small family did not oppose the ruling, signaling closure to a long-standing legal battle surrounding the tragic incident.
