Joe Cullen recently took to social media to express his strong disapproval of Mensur Suljovic, accusing the experienced darts player of cheating. Cullen faced a tough loss against Suljovic in a closely contested match at the World Darts Championship.
Suljovic made an impressive comeback after falling behind in a set, ultimately securing a 3-1 win over Cullen at Alexandra Palace. Throughout the game, Cullen displayed frustration by checking his watch sarcastically and quietly urging Suljovic to speed up his throws at the oche.
Known for his deliberate pace on the circuit, Suljovic’s extended celebrations and slow play seemed to aggravate Cullen, leading to a tense exchange of words during their post-match handshake. As Cullen exited the stage, he glared back at Suljovic, who was celebrating with the crowd, before venting his anger on social media.
In his online outburst, Cullen stated, “If that’s darts, I don’t want any part of it! Always liked Mensur away from the board but that was plain for all to see! I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this way. The old guard may call it part of the game, but however you phrase it – it’s CHEATING! That’s not darts.”
When questioned about Cullen’s reaction and whether he had apologized for his slow play, Suljovic seemed puzzled, stating, “I have never apologized to Joe Cullen in person. I play on that stage, what’s his issue? I may apologize to the referee, but not to Joe Cullen. Everyone plays differently.”
Suljovic further defended his style of play, emphasizing the individuality of players on the darts stage and expressing confusion over Cullen’s grievances. Looking ahead, Suljovic could potentially face reigning champion Luke Littler in the next round, while the young talent will square off against David Davies.
The PDC World Darts Championship commenced on December 11, offering fans the chance to watch every match live exclusively through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle.
