“Virgin Media O2 to Discontinue 2G Network by 2029”

Despite the prevalence of advanced 4G and 5G networks in the UK, the older 2G technology, established in 1993, is still in use, connecting certain devices like phones, alarms, and health equipment. However, Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to discontinue the 2G network in 2029 as part of its network modernization strategy to enhance future connectivity.

The move signifies a significant progression in the company’s efforts to upgrade its infrastructure and bolster connectivity standards. Retiring the 2G network will enable Virgin Media O2 to redirect investments towards expanding and enhancing its 4G and 5G networks. This transition is expected to result in improved network speeds, enhanced reliability, and reduced energy consumption, aligning with consumer demands.

Jeanie York, the Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, stated, “We are committing £700m this year to revamp our mobile network and ensure it meets the evolving consumer needs. By phasing out the legacy 2G network, we aim to focus on delivering dependable and efficient 4G and 5G services to all customers.”

With the recent shutdown of the 3G network and adherence to the government’s 2G switch-off charter, Virgin Media O2 is prepared to manage the transition responsibly without causing disruptions to customers. While most users will not need to take any immediate action, businesses relying on 2G services may need to start planning for the shift.

Virgin Media O2 will communicate directly with customers to provide support during the upgrade process. The planned shutdown in 2029 allows customers and businesses ample time to prepare and transition any devices reliant on 2G technology.

Since its inception in 1993, 2G has played a crucial role in mobile communication, offering reliable voice calls and text messaging with broad coverage. Despite the emergence of faster networks like 4G and 5G, 2G’s stability, energy efficiency, and wide coverage make it suitable for specific devices. However, the increasing demand for advanced mobile services has prompted Virgin Media O2 to phase out 2G and focus on advancing connectivity technologies.
