Veteran pilot Steve Schreiber, hailing from New Orleans, has garnered a substantial online following by leveraging his expertise to address common passenger inquiries and soothe the anxieties of nervous travelers. Recently, he responded to a worried fan’s question regarding potential mid-flight issues over the Atlantic.

The concerned traveler inquired, “What happens if there’s a problem mid-flight over the middle of the Atlantic with no nearby assistance?” Captain Schreiber promptly reassured them by explaining that pilots undergo continuous training for such scenarios.

On TikTok, he further detailed that each aircraft flying over the Atlantic is designated a specific ‘track’ to ensure safe distances not only in front and behind but also to the sides and above and below.

While these tracks primarily exist to maintain separation between planes, they are strategically positioned near suitable airports for emergency diversions along the flight path.

Schreiber clarified, “Some tracks extend northward around Iceland and Greenland, providing diversion options. There are also alternatives in Scotland, Ireland, the Maritimes, and Newfoundland on the other side of the Atlantic, ensuring that a suitable alternate is never more than two hours away.”

He explained, “In case of a southern track away from these airports, the Azores are typically within a two-hour reach.”

“The midpoint of the North Atlantic is at 30 West, marking the transition between oceanic controllers. This location is usually the farthest point from land,” the pilot elaborated.

Despite this segment being perceived as the most remote part of the journey, pilots remain vigilant for any potential issues, as shared by Captain Schreiber.
