“Toddlers Build Peanut Allergy Tolerance with Innovative Patch”

A breakthrough treatment has been developed to assist toddlers in building tolerance to a potentially life-threatening allergy. Recent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of a remedy, the Viaskin Peanut Patch, in helping individuals with peanut allergies. This treatment involves delivering small doses of peanut protein through the skin, with over 70% of participants showing tolerance to three to four peanut kernels after a three-year treatment regimen.

The promising results offer hope to parents of young children with severe peanut allergies, suggesting a viable treatment option for this population. The long-term study on the Viaskin Peanut Patch, also known as epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT), showed sustained improvement in peanut tolerance among toddlers over the three-year period. The primary objective of this treatment is to train the immune system to handle peanut exposure and reduce the risk of severe allergic reactions.

An analysis of toddlers who transitioned from a placebo to the peanut patch treatment revealed that more than 70% of them could tolerate the equivalent of three to four peanut kernels after three years, marking a significant enhancement compared to their initial year of treatment. Additionally, nearly half of the children could tolerate higher amounts, as reported by the research team. Notably, the treatment maintained a strong safety profile, with no instances of treatment-related anaphylaxis in the third year and a decrease in skin irritation at the patch site over time.

Furthermore, the study observed milder reactions during food challenges among children after three years of treatment compared to the first year. Dr. Matthew Greenhawt, the lead author of the study, emphasized the continuous improvement in tolerance and safety with the peanut patch treatment. These findings support the potential of this approach to provide peace of mind for parents of toddlers with peanut allergies by reducing the risk of severe allergic reactions from accidental exposure.

The study underscores the importance of early intervention in managing peanut allergies and highlights the necessity of consulting a qualified allergist for emerging treatment options. The research findings were presented at the annual scientific meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (ACAAI) in Orlando, Florida.
