A woman who was hitchhiking shared her harrowing experience of narrowly escaping a dangerous truck driver who was responsible for the torture and murder of 50 women.
Vanessa Veselka, aged 56, came close to becoming a victim of the infamous serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, who transformed his truck into a horrifying torture chamber during his reign of terror in the United States from 1975 to 1990.
Referred to as the ‘Truck Stop Killer’, Rhoades frequently preyed on vulnerable hitchhikers, sex workers, and young women traveling alone at truck stops.
In 1985, Vanessa hitched a ride with a truck driver near Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, shortly after the discovery of a deceased teenage hitchhiker at a truck stop dumpster.
They journeyed to Ohio, where the ride seemed uneventful as they sipped on Diet Coke and enjoyed music by Bruce Springsteen.
However, Vanessa’s trip took a terrifying turn days later when she was picked up by another truck driver who turned out to be the menacing Rhoades.
She described him as “leaner than most truckers” with an exceptionally clean cab. Initially appearing normal, Rhoades’ demeanor shifted ominously as they drove away.
Recalling the incident in Vanity Fair, Vanessa mentioned that Rhoades ceased responding to her questions, his posture changed, and he began discussing a deceased girl in a dumpster and a mysterious group called the Laughing Death Society.
After pulling over by a wooded area and brandishing a hunting knife, Vanessa tried to reason with him, repeating phrases to stall for time until he eventually commanded her to run, allowing her to escape into the woods.
Years later, Vanessa, now an accomplished author, learned about Rhoades’ killing spree in 2012 and realized she had encountered the same man. Rhoades’ first confirmed victim was Regina Kay Walters, a 14-year-old girl abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered in 1990.
Rhoades’ truck was equipped with handcuffs on the ceiling, enabling him to restrain and torment his female victims before ending their lives. Among his victims were newlyweds Patricia Candace Walsh and Douglas Scott Zyskowski, who met a tragic fate at his hands during a hitchhiking trip in 1989.
Ultimately, Rhoades was apprehended in Arizona in 1990 after a state trooper found a woman chained inside his truck. He was later convicted of Regina’s murder and is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
