“Grandmother Blames Brother’s Work Clothes for Terminal Cancer”

A 68-year-old grandmother, Marie Pickup, who is fighting terminal cancer, believes that her illness may have stemmed from embracing her brother excessively. Last year, during a routine chest X-ray for former smokers, abnormalities in her abdomen were detected.

Upon further examination, medical experts diagnosed her with peritoneal mesothelioma, a type of cancer affecting the abdominal lining linked to asbestos exposure. Marie suspects that her brother, a joiner at Blackburn Corporation (now Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council) from 1980 to 1985, unknowingly exposed her to asbestos through his dusty work clothes, as she would hug him daily upon his return from work.

Expressing her concern, Marie, a mother of three and grandmother of two, recalled her brother’s dust-covered attire and her proximity to the clothing when her mother shook it out in the kitchen. She now reflects on these moments with sadness, realizing that such innocent gestures may have led to her diagnosis.

Marie, a former enthusiastic gardener, and narrowboat enthusiast with her husband, Tony, can no longer partake in these cherished activities due to the discomfort in her abdomen. Seeking answers, Marie has enlisted the support of asbestos-related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, who are appealing for information related to the refurbishment of council-owned deck access flats and renovation projects on the Delph Estate during the 1980s.

Helen Tomlin, Marie’s legal representative, emphasized the long-lasting impact of asbestos exposure, highlighting how individuals not directly working with the substance can also suffer from related illnesses. She stressed the importance of gathering information from individuals, particularly those who were involved in renovation projects during Marie’s time as Marie Halliwell, to shed light on her exposure to asbestos.

Despite the irreversible impact of Marie’s diagnosis, the focus remains on providing her with the necessary answers. Those who have information regarding the work carried out at Blackburn Corporation in the early 1980s, especially concerning the deck access flats and the Delph Estate, are encouraged to come forward as their input could be crucial in helping Marie and her family comprehend the circumstances surrounding her asbestos exposure.
