A recent survey of 2,000 men uncovered that 74% are aware of the connection between testosterone and sex drive, but many lack knowledge about its other important functions. Surprisingly, 54% did not know that testosterone regulates mood, and 76% were unaware of its impact on bone density. Lesser-known effects of testosterone include influencing muscle mass, facial hair growth, sperm production, and voice depth.
Nearly three in 10 men expressed concerns about having insufficient testosterone levels, often due to issues like erectile dysfunction. The research, conducted by Leger Clinic, revealed that Dr Doug Savage, the Medical Director, emphasized the complex role of testosterone in men’s health beyond common belief.
Dr Savage stated, “Low testosterone levels can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, low confidence, increased abdominal fat, and even depression. Understanding the broader functions of testosterone is crucial, as addressing it can significantly improve quality of life beyond sexual health.”
The study highlighted that 58% of men believe low testosterone levels would negatively impact their lives, with 36% fearing it would harm their relationships and 28% feeling inadequate as men. Interestingly, 24% of participants consider themselves to have below-average testosterone levels, while 39% wish for higher levels, believing it would enhance their attractiveness to potential partners.
Although 68% of men expressed interest in a free testosterone check, only 18% have discussed it with a healthcare professional. However, 61% are willing to make lifestyle changes to boost their testosterone levels.
The survey, conducted via OnePoll.com, also found that two-thirds of men (66%) have encountered difficulties achieving or maintaining erections. Dr Savage noted, “It’s evident that many men are eager to take action, whether through testing or lifestyle adjustments, which is a positive step forward.”
He added, “Despite the willingness to address testosterone issues, there still seem to be barriers preventing open discussions with loved ones or healthcare providers. Researching and testing for testosterone levels is a simple step that could significantly impact your health and confidence.”
