“Surrey Six Killer Denied Appeal, Faces Life Sentence”

A judge at the B.C. Supreme Court has denied a request from one of the Surrey Six murderers to halt his convictions. Justice Martha Devlin ruled that Cody Haevischer’s claims of police and corrections officials’ misconduct did not warrant overturning his convictions. Consequently, Haevischer is now officially convicted of six murders and one count of conspiracy to commit murder, leading to a life sentence.

Haevischer, convicted in 2014 for the Surrey Six killings, sought to halt the proceedings, alleging police misconduct and mistreatment during his incarceration. Despite his plea for a reduction in sentence, Devlin dismissed most of his claims, acknowledging only a breach of his Charter rights due to solitary confinement.

The legal battle surrounding the 2007 murders involved Haevischer and his co-accused Johnston. After an initial conviction in 2014, their application to halt proceedings was dismissed. Subsequent appeals led to a new hearing in 2024, where Johnston passed away in custody.

Devlin’s recent decision was met with relief by victims’ families present in the courtroom. Eileen Mohan, mother of one of the innocent victims, praised the verdict as a step towards justice. The judge highlighted the severity of the Surrey Six murders, emphasizing Haevischer’s direct involvement in the killings.

Devlin carefully reviewed Haevischer’s claims of police impropriety and mistreatment, ultimately finding no substantial evidence to warrant halting the proceedings. She acknowledged the challenges in the case but concluded that the law must be upheld. Haevischer’s convictions were officially entered into the record, and he also faces sentencing for contempt of court.
