A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study shows that many smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.
The research indicates that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are common complaints among broadband users. Slow download speeds and service outages are also recurring frustrations for consumers.
A significant 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing problems with their internet service in the past year, highlighting a lack of trouble-free connections for most households.
Among the leading providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers encountering this issue. Virgin Media also underperformed, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices for their broadband services. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin customers voiced dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.
Sky users expressed disappointment with the speed of their broadband service, with nearly one in three stating that it wasn’t fast enough. Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received poor ratings from customers.
On the other hand, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic have excelled in providing reliable services, outperforming many major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, surpassing competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
The findings align with previous Which? research, consistently showing that smaller broadband companies excel in reliability, customer service, and value compared to major providers in the UK.
Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Utilizing Ofcom’s broadband checker can help identify available broadband networks.
In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized their ongoing investments to improve services and highlighted positive independent data showcasing their performance across various broadband categories.
The report underscores the importance of good-quality broadband as an essential service and urges consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch to providers that offer better service.
