“Over 90 Inmates Mistakenly Released in 2024”

Downing Street has acknowledged the alarming revelation that over 90 inmates have been mistakenly released since April this year. Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy disclosed that three prisoners are currently missing after being released erroneously, with authorities also looking into a possible wrongful release on November 3. The Ministry of Justice recently disclosed that 91 criminals were wrongfully set free between April 1 and October 31 this year.

A spokesperson from No 10 emphasized that these incidents reflect challenges inherited by the government, with a strained prison system and failing criminal justice mechanisms. While such occurrences are rare, they have been escalating annually, from an average of nine per month in 2023 to 17 per month the following year. Immediate actions have been implemented, including enhanced release checks, consultations with prison governors, and deployment of technical experts to address the prison crisis.

David Lammy announced a £10 million allocation for the implementation of AI-powered tools to aid frontline staff in accurately calculating sentences and upgrading outdated paper-based systems. An urgent independent review has also been commissioned to investigate the surge in errors. The Ministry of Justice highlighted the burden on prison staff, who are currently navigating through excessive guidance documentation, leading to an increased likelihood of mistakes.

The issue of mistaken prisoner releases gained prominence following the well-publicized case of Hadush Kebatu, a deported migrant linked to protests in Epping, Essex. In a parliamentary address, Lammy stressed the need for a radical transformation of the prison release service and extended an unequivocal apology to victims affected by inadvertent releases. He underscored the challenges faced by an underfunded and understaffed prison system operating under immense pressure, emphasizing the urgency to address the underlying issues.

Under the Conservative administration, around 800 prisoners were erroneously released, with a notable increase in such incidents over the years. The trend continued under the previous Conservative government, reaching 115 erroneous releases in 2023/24. In the first year under a Labour government, the number of incorrect releases surged to 262, partly attributed to Labour’s early release program necessitated by the inherited justice system crisis.

David Lammy defended proposals to release female offenders into the community after the plans were mistakenly sent to Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick via email. He advocated for alternative approaches in handling women offenders, considering factors such as their roles as mothers.
