An atrocious incident unfolded when a nursery school teacher committed a heinous act by sexually assaulting her partner’s 4-year-old daughter and causing her death by drowning. The perpetrator, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, carried out this despicable act on January 23, 2023, leading to the tragic demise of the young girl named Nada-Jane Chalita. The court learned that Nada-Jane’s father, Elie, entrusted Hughes with his daughter while he attended a job interview.
Following Elie’s departure, Hughes, feeling enraged by what she perceived as Elie’s neglect, harbored suspicions of infidelity. Prior to the abhorrent assault and murder, Hughes sent a disturbing message expressing her anguish over feeling betrayed by Elie. Subsequently, she callously placed Nada-Jane in the bathtub and sat on her until the child drowned. The autopsy revealed that Nada-Jane had also been sexually assaulted on two separate occasions before her tragic end.
During the trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes admitted to grappling with borderline personality disorder at the time of the incident but acknowledged her awareness of her actions that day. She cited a heated argument with Elie regarding his alleged infidelity as the primary trigger for the events that transpired, with the final straw being Elie’s request for her to stop contacting him incessantly.
Hughes confessed to leaving the unresponsive child unattended in the bathtub with the water running cold after the fatal incident. Subsequently, she made multiple attempts to take her own life in the aftermath of the crime.
At the sentencing on October 27, Hughes attributed her actions to a troubled childhood and mental health struggles. Testimony from social worker Carina Wolmarans highlighted Hughes’ history of being bullied and her previous suicide attempts. Despite expressing remorse and a desire to undo her actions, Hughes was deemed to have premeditated the crime by Judge Richard Mkabela, who referenced incriminating messages indicating her intentions.
The court proceedings revealed that Hughes had entered a relationship with Elie in 2021 and had moved in with him and Nada-Jane. Reports detailed a tumultuous relationship marked by Hughes’ threats towards Nada-Jane.
Hughes was convicted in August on charges of premeditated murder and vaginal rape, carrying mandatory life imprisonment sentences. Elie, the grieving father, expressed that no sentence could ever suffice for the loss he endured, lamenting the absence of true justice in the world or in his lifetime.
