“Newfoundland and Labrador Prison Chief Removed Amid Financial Irregularities”

The head of prisons in Newfoundland and Labrador has been removed from their position following the uncovering of financial and administrative irregularities at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The Department of Justice and Public Safety disclosed that an internal review has been initiated into the financial and administrative procedures at St. John’s largest correctional facility.

The department confirmed the presence of irregularities at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary and emphasized the seriousness of such incidents, prompting immediate action. Dan Chafe, who has been the province’s Superintendent of Prisons since 2020 and previously served as high sheriff for five years, is facing uncertainties regarding his current status, with Susan Green, the former provincial manager of institutional programs, now acting as Superintendent of Prisons.

In response to the situation, the Department of Justice and Public Safety has involved the Office of the Comptroller General in the review process and is awaiting the outcomes. Additionally, the Office of the Auditor General has been informed about the matter, although it is yet to be determined if an investigation will be conducted.

Despite requests for comment, Chafe did not respond to CBC News via his government email. The developments in this case are ongoing, and further updates are expected as the review progresses.
