NATO forces have successfully taken down an unidentified drone that was observed flying in proximity to a US military base in Estonia, near the Russian border. The incident occurred at Camp Reedo, a US Army installation in Europe and Africa, situated less than 30 miles from Russia. The drone sighting occurred amidst tensions between Putin’s Russia and the Baltic state, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine.
Reports indicate that two drones were detected in the area, with one being intercepted, although it remains unclear if US forces were directly involved. The event, which occurred on October 17, was only recently disclosed. Estonian Defense Forces spokesperson Liis Vaksmann confirmed that the drone was neutralized using an anti-drone rifle near the 2nd Infantry Brigade’s base.
Estonian authorities conducted a search for the downed drone but were unsuccessful in locating it. This incident follows recent airspace violations by Russian MiG-31 fighters over Estonia, underscoring the region’s vulnerability to Russian encroachments. British troops stationed in Estonia as part of a NATO battlegroup have been working to deter Russian aggression under Operation Cabrit since 2017.
The Reedo base houses the US Army’s 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, an armored reconnaissance unit. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized the necessity for NATO to be prepared to intercept and neutralize any aircraft infringing on sovereign airspace. Tsahkna stressed the importance of a clear message that violations would face consequences, including the interception and downing of intruding aircraft, to safeguard both Estonia’s and NATO’s borders.
Meanwhile, Ukraine carried out significant strikes on Russia, causing substantial damage to oil and petrochemical facilities. Key targets included an ATAN oil depot in Hvardiiske, occupied Crimea, and the Mari Refinery in Yoshkar-Ola, among others. The Ukrainian campaign to bomb oil facilities has led to petrol price hikes and supply shortages in Russia. In response, Russia conducted strikes on various locations, including a power station in Podilsk, Odesa region.
The recent incidents highlight the escalating tensions in the region and the ongoing struggles between neighboring countries.
