“Monument Honors 2SLGBTQ+ Discrimination in Canada”

The sculpture known as Thunderhead features a cylindrical structure pierced by a thundercloud, revealing thousands of small mirrors that glimmer when exposed to light.

For Wayne Davis and other individuals who were dismissed from the military, RCMP, and civil service in Canada due to their sexual orientation between the Cold War era and the 1990s, the monument serves as a symbol of the discrimination faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in Canadian history.

Expressing his admiration for the monument’s visibility, Davis remarked, “The glitter will not be easily forgotten,” following its official unveiling in Ottawa.

Davis anticipates that the monument will educate many about a dark chapter in Canadian history for the first time.

Recalling his experience, the 79-year-old Vancouver resident vividly remembers the moment he candidly admitted his sexuality to his RCMP supervisor after being questioned about his presence at a gay bar.

“I said, ‘I was in a gay bar because I’m gay,'” Davis recounted.

Initially feeling a sense of relief at being able to live openly, Davis soon faced the harsh reality that his honesty was not accepted by the RCMP leadership.

Given an ultimatum to resign or be terminated, Davis had to swiftly gather his belongings by the end of the day.

By 1985, Davis, who had advanced to the rank of staff sergeant and served in various locations, including Duncan, Sidney, and Victoria, saw his promising career abruptly halted due to his sexuality.

Despite starting as a high school dropout from Drumheller, Alta., Davis had cherished the idea of a fulfilling career as a Mountie.

Davis was just one of approximately 9,000 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians who were targeted, harassed, and coerced into resigning or were dismissed from their positions in the military, RCMP, and civil service.

These actions were based on the unfounded belief that their sexual orientation posed a security risk and could be exploited by foreign operatives.

    Many Victims Suffered Shame

According to Davis, many victims of the purge experienced shame in explaining to their families the circumstances surrounding their job loss.

“They couldn’t confide in their families or return home,” Davis reflected. “People lost not only their careers and livelihoods but also their family ties.”

For Elenore Sturko, the silence surrounding her great uncle’s ordeal persisted within her family until well after his passing.

Sturko, currently serving as the Independent MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale, described Sgt. Robert David Van Norman as a decorated RCMP officer who dedicated his service to remote communities in Canada’s north and contributed to the radar defense system against potential threats.
