Mandelson, who was ousted by PM Keir Starmer in September due to his close ties with the disgraced financier, has faced further repercussions, including losing his honorary role at the publicly-funded Design Museum in London, where he previously served as chair. Additionally, Manchester Metropolitan University has revoked his honors, and he has resigned as a fellow of an Oxford college. Recent revelations indicate that Mandelson maintained contact with Epstein until as late as 2016.
The Design Museum, upon inquiry, confirmed that Mandelson no longer holds any official position within the institution. His removal from the website’s list of former trustees under the “Trustee Emeriti” section was initiated by the museum after questions were raised about his involvement. A spokesperson clarified that the honorary title carried no active responsibilities or governance duties at the museum.
Email correspondence unveiled Mandelson’s continued support for Epstein, with messages exchanged even after Epstein’s conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution. Notably, in a 2016 email, Epstein congratulated Mandelson on his birthday, hinting at their ongoing communication. The emails also indicated Mandelson warning Epstein to steer clear of Prince Andrew, who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct.
Mandelson’s correspondence with Epstein in 2016 coincided with his appointment as chairman of the Design Museum. His profile on the museum’s website highlighted his achievements and positions in government before it was removed. The Design Museum, a registered charity, has received funding from various sources and is currently showcasing exhibitions on iconic London nightlife and filmmaker Wes Anderson.
Despite expressing regret over his association with Epstein, Mandelson has not issued a comment on the recent developments.
