“Expert Warns: Overdosing on Vitamin D May Harm Bones”

A doctor has issued a caution about the potential health risks associated with excessive intake of a commonly used supplement during the winter season. The expert highlighted that an overdose of this particular vitamin may have adverse effects on bone health.

While a well-rounded diet should ideally provide all necessary vitamins and minerals, many individuals turn to supplements to bridge any nutritional gaps. Vitamin D is one such essential nutrient that our bodies primarily acquire through sunlight exposure. Hence, the NHS recommends supplementing with vitamin D during the autumn and winter months when sunlight exposure is limited.

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphate levels in the body, essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to bone problems like rickets in children and osteomalacia-related bone pain in adults.

However, like any supplement, vitamin D also comes with precautions. In a video shared on the social media platform TikTok, Dr. Suraj Kukadia, known as Dr. Sooj, advised against consuming excessively high doses of vitamin D, cautioning that it could weaken bones. This warning aligns with guidance from the NHS.

According to the NHS website, prolonged intake of excessive vitamin D supplements may lead to hypercalcemia, causing bone weakening, kidney damage, and heart issues. The recommended daily dose of vitamin D is 10 micrograms (mcg) or 40 IU, with doses exceeding 100mcg considered harmful.

The NHS further advises that for most individuals, 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily is adequate, with a warning not to exceed 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) per day. This guideline applies to adults, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, the elderly, and children aged 11 to 17 years. Children aged one to 10 years should not exceed 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) per day, while infants under 12 months should not exceed 25 micrograms (1,000 IU) per day. Additionally, individuals with certain medical conditions may need to limit their vitamin D intake.

In case of uncertainty, individuals are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider for personalized advice on vitamin D supplementation. While it is not possible to overdose on vitamin D from sunlight exposure, it is advisable to protect the skin from prolonged sun exposure to prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Apart from supplements, certain foods also serve as good sources of vitamin D. For more details, visit the NHS website.

    Remember, your health matters.
