Gary Southgate’s dream of showcasing the tales of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has come to fruition with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. The journey, meandering through grassy riverbanks and weathered badlands, brought tears of joy to Southgate during the inaugural public ride last month.

Originally from North Battleford, Sask., Southgate’s passion for trains led him to collect vintage railcars, aiming not only to own them but to restore them for operational use. His fascination with trains dates back to childhood, sparked by the sight of a steam locomotive passing by in his hometown. Starting with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, Southgate eventually shifted his focus to acquiring CN equipment to recreate the nostalgic ambiance of the Super Continental passenger trains.

The collection has grown substantially over the years, with Southgate saving numerous railcars from salvage yards for restoration and potential museum use. Despite facing challenges, such as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate persevered, determined to bring his vision to life while managing a farm over 360 kilometers away.

Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, supported by Great Western Railway staff, has successfully operated several trips this year, attracting visitors from various regions, including international tourists. Southgate’s long-term vision includes developing amenities like an RV park, a museum showcasing historic train equipment, and maintenance facilities at the railyard. His ultimate goal is to preserve history and create a unique experience for Eastend, Saskatchewan, and all of Canada.

Southgate remains optimistic about the future of his endeavor, hoping to secure the sustainability of the railway tours and leave a lasting legacy. Despite the challenges, he is determined to see his project thrive and inspire others to continue his legacy after his time.
