“Deadly Flash Flood at Grand Canyon: Texas Chiropractor Among Victims”

The Grand Canyon experienced a devastating flash flood over the weekend, leading to the discovery of the bodies of a Texas chiropractor and another individual. The heavy rain caused significant flooding, with rescuers saving around 80 people, while one person remains missing.

Officials utilized night vision technology and other tools to evacuate individuals from the park, tracking missing persons through the park’s permit system and vehicle license plates. Despite these efforts, there may be unaccounted day hikers who did not have permits.

The weather forecast predicted more rain and thunderstorms, posing a risk of further flooding at the Grand Canyon. The flood damaged the canyon’s only water pipeline, prompting emergency water restrictions for residents and the closure of lodges and hotels for tourists within the park.

Video footage captured the forceful floodwaters carrying debris through the canyon, causing significant damage. The National Weather Service attributed the flash flooding to multiple waves of rainfall over the weekend.

The National Park Service reported that the Grand Canyon typically receives less than 25 centimeters of rain annually. The recovery of bodies near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River was confirmed, and the flood altered the landscape by widening the creek bed and creating new river rapids.

Popular tourist spots like Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch remained closed for assessment of the damage. Rafting trips on the Colorado River were also suspended temporarily. Hikers and visitors shared harrowing experiences of witnessing the sudden flood and being airlifted to safety.

The rapid onset flash flooding served as a stark reminder of the Grand Canyon’s dynamic nature, showcasing the power and unpredictability of natural forces.
