The incident occurred on the evening of May 5th when young Oliver Gorman was found unresponsive in his Hyde home after returning from a family vacation. Despite immediate hospitalization, he could not be saved. The cause of death was determined to be inhalation of butane gas from multiple empty deodorant cans found in his room.

Expressing major concerns over the proliferation of such challenges on TikTok, the coroner criticized the platform for making these harmful trends easily accessible to vulnerable youth. Suggestions were made for enhanced warning labels and potential age restrictions on purchasing aerosol deodorants to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Describing Oliver as a sweet and family-oriented boy, his mother, Clare Gillespie, highlighted his love for animals and calming presence. The inquest revealed that Oliver, in his first year at Denton Community Academy, exhibited signs of struggling with the transition to high school. Concerns about potential bullying were also raised, although no concrete evidence was found during the investigation.

The tragic incident shed light on the dangers of inhaling aerosols, with authorities noting the presence of several aerosol deodorant bottles in Oliver’s room. The coroner emphasized the need for stricter regulations on aerosol purchases and raised alarms about the influence of social media trends on young minds.

In the aftermath of Oliver’s passing, his family and friends launched a campaign called Oliver’s Awareness to raise awareness about bullying and cyberbullying. Speaking out against the dangers of aerosols and social media trends, Ms. Gillespie urged parents to be vigilant and informed about the potential risks posed by such activities.
