Celebrities Push to Axe “Cruel” Two-Child Benefit Limit

More than 40 well-known personalities, including Arlene Phillips, Mark Bonnar, Jason Isaacs, and Bill Nighy, have united to demand the removal of the “cruel” two-child benefit limit in the upcoming Budget. The group, organized by the foodbank charity Trussell, penned a letter to Keir Starmer urging the immediate elimination of the policy. They emphasized the negative impact of the two-child limit, which deprives families of support from the social security system and forces children into poverty.

The letter highlighted the harmful consequences of the policy, stating that it penalizes children for their mere existence and drives families to rely on food banks. The signatories, including prominent figures like Simon Pegg, Stanley Tucci, and Jodie Whittaker, emphasized the urgency of scrapping the limit to prevent further hardship for families.

Levi Roots, the creator of Reggae Reggae sauce, who experienced poverty firsthand, shared his personal struggles and emphasized the need to eradicate the two-child limit to uplift children from poverty. The group of celebrities stressed the importance of collective action to bring about meaningful change and improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of children.

The celebrities called on the government to prioritize the well-being of children and emphasized that removing the two-child limit is crucial to addressing child poverty effectively. They urged swift action to ensure that children receive the support they need to thrive.

In response, both Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have signaled their intention to abolish the two-child benefit limit in the forthcoming Budget statement on November 26. They emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing child poverty and ensuring a better future for all children.

The two-child benefit limit, introduced in 2017, restricts child tax credit and universal credit to households with only two children. With child poverty rates alarmingly high, the government is under pressure to implement measures to alleviate the financial burden on families.

The Prime Minister has pledged to unveil a series of initiatives to combat child poverty, including existing programs like free school meals and childcare. The government is also investing in initiatives such as Best Start Family Hubs to support children’s development and combat hunger in vulnerable communities.

The celebrities’ letter concluded with a strong plea to the Prime Minister to take immediate action and eliminate the two-child limit to protect children from hunger and provide them with a better future. They emphasized the urgency of the situation and called on the government to fulfill its commitment to tackling child poverty effectively.
