Tom Noble and Faith Richmond were taken aback to discover that their baby had lost his left hand in the womb due to a rare condition known as amniotic band syndrome. This condition occurs when the baby’s movements rupture the amniotic sac early in development, resulting in the formation of tissue bands inside the womb that can ensnare the baby.
The couple, residents of County Durham, were overjoyed when they learned about the pregnancy in August 2024. Initial scans and genetic testing indicated a normal progression. However, during a private gender scan at 15 weeks, they received the heartbreaking news that their son was missing his left hand.
Faith, a 33-year-old hairdresser, described the news as a profound shock, almost surreal in nature.
Following referrals to multiple medical facilities, it was confirmed that their baby, named Ezra, had suffered the loss of his hand due to amniotic band syndrome. Faith underwent weekly scans thereafter to monitor the condition and prevent further harm.
Tom, a 30-year-old business development manager, expressed the emotional turmoil of the uncertain wait, switching between hope and fear as they monitored Ezra’s progress.
By 28 weeks, Faith felt some relief as the odds of Ezra’s survival improved. However, a sudden complication arose when the bands began tightening around him, nearly causing premature delivery at 30 weeks. Fortunately, Ezra managed to free himself from the entanglement just in time.
In February 2025, Tom participated in the Great North Run to raise awareness about Ezra’s condition. The couple’s openness led to an outpouring of support and donations from others facing similar challenges.
At 37 weeks, Faith underwent induction, and baby Ezra was born in April 2025. Despite initial complications like jaundice and the need for incubation treatment, Ezra was overall healthy. Ongoing check-ups monitor his progress, particularly regarding potential issues with his elbow region.
Ezra is awaiting prosthetic assistance, but his parents are confident that his resilient spirit will carry him through. Tom’s charity run also aimed to raise awareness and support for organizations like Tommy’s and LimbBo.
Looking ahead, the family remains optimistic about Ezra’s future, though they acknowledge potential concerns about bullying in his school years. Faith emphasized the importance of equipping Ezra with the confidence to navigate any challenges he may face.
The challenging pregnancy experience has not deterred Faith from considering expanding their family in the future, viewing it as a learning opportunity from a difficult journey.
