Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw competitions, respectively, during the recent Diamond League event held in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at the Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt. She currently holds the titles of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. DeAnna Price from the United States secured the second position with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third place with a distance of 71.95 meters.
Continuing the Canadian dominance in hammer throwing, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the men’s event with a top throw of 82.92 meters, adding to his collection of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles. Merlin Hummel from Germany finished second with a throw of 81.25 meters, and Bence Halász from Hungary secured the third spot with a distance of 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. Jamaica’s Oblique Seville claimed victory in a meeting-record time of 9.83 seconds, followed by Kenny Bednarek from the United States in second place with a season-best time of 9.87 seconds, and Christian Coleman, a former world champion, finished third in 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m event saw American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden take the win with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia secured second place with a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist, finished third with a time of 10.96 seconds.
In a surprising turn of events, American Ethan Strand claimed victory in the men’s 1,500m race with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech from Kenya finished second in 3:31.14, followed by Cole Hocker from the United States in third place with a time of 3:31.16. Notably, Norwegian distance-running star Jakob Ingebrigtsen secured fourth place after his recent return from Achilles surgery at the European Championships.
The upcoming and final Diamond League event of the season is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, leading up to the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The global track and field season will culminate with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, set to take place from September 11 to 13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw, while Rogers, despite her similar accolades on the women’s side, will not participate as the women’s hammer throw is not part of the championship program.
