A woman’s life was forever altered after experiencing a stroke during a vacation with friends in Fethiye, Turkey. Cathy Warren, celebrating her birthday, suddenly felt dizzy and lost the ability to walk while heading to a birthday dinner. Initially attributing her symptoms to a severe headache from the heat, she was later diagnosed with a stroke at a hospital, waking up with paralysis on her left side and a new Thai accent.

Diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome, Cathy expressed feeling like a part of her identity was lost. Despite making progress in her recovery, including regaining the ability to walk, she remains uncertain if her original British accent will return. She recalled the moment of the stroke, where she struggled to walk, crawled due to her legs’ failure, and was eventually taken to the hospital for scans confirming the stroke.

Following the diagnosis in March 2025, Cathy underwent speech therapy to address her foreign accent, resembling her Thai mother’s speech. Despite completing therapy, her accent persists, with doctors citing the rarity of a full recovery. Cathy spent a month in a Turkish hospital before returning to the UK in October 2024, undergoing further inpatient care and rehabilitation to relearn walking independently, a process that took approximately ten months.

Foreign Accent Syndrome, characterized by a person speaking with an accent different from their usual one, often occurs following a stroke or brain injury. Cathy’s journey highlights the challenges and adjustments faced post-stroke, including coping with a new accent and navigating the uncertainties of recovery.
