In Fort Nelson, British Columbia, a black bear was euthanized on August 19 following multiple reports of the bear rummaging through garbage bins in residential areas. Rogan Thin, a conservation officer in the Peace and Northern Rockies region, stated that the male bear had become accustomed to human food and showed no fear towards people.

Residents had expressed concerns about bears foraging in their neighborhoods, with garbage being identified as the primary attractant in most incidents. Thin emphasized the importance of removing bear attractants such as food waste and fallen fruits to minimize human-bear conflicts and enhance proactive conservation efforts.

Carmella Louis, a Fort Nelson resident, initiated a petition urging for stricter bear-proofing measures and improved attractant management policies. Louis highlighted the growing lack of fear among bears and the potential risks this poses to the community, especially children.

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality already has bylaws mandating residents to secure their garbage and compost to prevent wildlife access. Mayor Rob Fraser advised residents to report aggressive bear behavior and ensure their trash containers are properly secured, recommending the use of the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline when necessary.

To tackle the issue, a volunteer group is available to assist residents in harvesting fruits to reduce attractants. While the municipality lacks bear-resistant bins, some residents have proactively acquired them. Fraser stressed the need for proper garbage management and highlighted the importance of reducing the exposure of trash bins to deter bear interactions.

Thin recommended utilizing bear-resistant garbage bins with sturdy metal components to thwart bear access effectively. The community is encouraged to take proactive measures to mitigate potential conflicts with bears and safeguard both residents and wildlife.
