An acclaimed B&B and café has shut down in a significant blow to the local community, with the owner attributing the closure to the challenging location that led to a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, ceased operations in Alburgh, Norfolk, after a successful run of two and a half years, catering to what owner Sonya Resemblance referred to as a clientele of “beautiful people.”
This closure adds to the ongoing struggle faced by pubs and hospitality establishments in Britain, with many facing closure annually due to increasing expenses and evolving consumer behaviors, causing strain within the industry.
In a similar vein, the popular White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently, reflecting the challenges faced by pub owners who have been hit hard by surging costs. The industry saw 300 pub closures in the first quarter of 2025, prompting concerns about its future viability.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, The Dove Inn could not sustain its operations. Under Sonya Resemblance’s management since July 2023, the establishment offered a range of meals, including brunch, lunch, and sought-after Sunday roasts, contributing to the local economy by providing jobs, training opportunities, and organizing events focused on mental well-being.
The business received accolades at the Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards in Norfolk, winning titles like Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year. Notably, the menu was entirely gluten-free, a feature that Sonya took great pride in, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In a heartfelt message announcing the closure, Sonya expressed gratitude for the support received, emphasizing the positive impact the business had on the community through job creation, training initiatives, and offering a space for social interaction vital for mental health.
She acknowledged the challenges faced by retailers and hospitality businesses, noting the location’s role in the closure. Despite efforts from loyal customers to keep the business afloat, The Dove Inn closed its doors on Friday, January 16, prompting an outpouring of supportive messages from patrons saddened by the news.
Customers expressed their regret over the closure, reminiscing about the pleasant gatherings and exceptional food provided by the establishment, expressing hope for a potential return in the future.
