“Canso Canal Mackerel Fishing Spot Closed Indefinitely”

New fencing has been put up around the Canso Canal, leading to the sudden closure of a popular mackerel fishing spot in Cape Breton. This action follows federal warnings about the deteriorating condition of the canal’s infrastructure.

The Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of National Defence have indefinitely shut down the canal’s north and south mooring berths after an engineering assessment deemed the structures to be in a state of critical disrepair. This closure has disrupted a traditional pastime enjoyed by local anglers for many generations.

For Waddie Long, a resident of Port Hawkesbury, the closure signifies the end of a cherished family tradition. Long reminisced about his childhood spent fishing at the canal and lamented that he will not be able to pass down this experience to his grandchildren.

Local fishers, who often gather in groups at the causeway, feel that federal authorities are disregarding their knowledge of the risks associated with recreational fishing. Robin Murphy, a seasoned angler with 40 years of experience at the canal, expressed her frustration at the safety concerns raised by officials, highlighting the unique accessibility and fishing experience offered by the site.

Peter Britten, another resident of Port Hawkesbury, echoed the sentiment of many in the community, expressing disappointment at the closure and hoping for safety improvements rather than a complete exclusion from the area.

In addition to recreational value, Long emphasized the historical significance of mackerel fishing as a vital food source for families in the Strait area. He recalled a time when wild food harvesting was a common practice, highlighting the importance of preserving traditional activities like fishing for mackerel.

According to Craig Macartney, a communications adviser for the Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of National Defence, the future of the canal’s south mooring berth remains uncertain due to structural issues. There is currently no timeline for redevelopment or reopening the area to the public.

The closure of the mackerel fishing spot at the Canso Canal has sparked disappointment and concern among local residents who value the tradition and significance of this recreational activity.
