“Republican Party Withdraws CBC’s Convention Access”

The media accreditation granted by the Republican Party for the upcoming midterm convention has been withdrawn from CBC/Radio-Canada journalists, as confirmed by Chuck Thompson, CBC’s head of public affairs. The Republican National Committee (RNC) made the decision to deny CBC/Radio-Canada journalists access to cover the convention in Dallas, Texas, on September 9 and 10. Thompson expressed disappointment at the RNC’s decision and mentioned that CBC is evaluating the situation, hoping for a reconsideration.

Despite CBC News’ attempts to obtain comments from convention organizers via email on Monday evening, no immediate response was received. When CBC reached out to the White House for information, they were directed to the RNC, who could not be reached by phone that same evening.

The revocation of CBC/Radio-Canada’s media accreditation comes as tensions between Canada and the United States have escalated due to recent tit-for-tat sanctions and strong rhetoric from officials on both sides of the border. Criticism towards CBC heightened after an internal memo leak discussing the use of the terms “terrorism” and “terrorist” in relation to the 9/11 attacks garnered international attention.

The memo outlined a policy instructing CBC journalists to refrain from labeling specific attacks as “terrorist acts” unless the term is explicitly attributed. This policy sparked significant backlash ahead of the 25th-anniversary commemoration of 9/11 next month. In response to the backlash, CBC’s senior director of journalistic standards and public trust, Basem Boshra, announced adjustments to clarify that direct attribution is not mandatory when describing the 9/11 events as acts of terrorism. This was done to enhance clarity and public comprehension.

Republican lawmakers and Trump administration officials had previously criticized CBC following the memo leak. The situation has raised concerns about freedom of the press and media access during critical events such as political conventions.

The altered language guidance from CBC aims to address the unintended confusion caused by the previous policy and ensure accurate reporting on historical events like 9/11. The ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Canada, in addition to the media accreditation revocation, have underscored the complexities surrounding media coverage and political discourse in the current climate.
