Lu Dort had an impressive debut in Quebec City, scoring 25 points, while his Atlanta Hawks’ teammate, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, contributed 26 points to lead Canada to a 97-92 victory over Argentina in the FIBA men’s basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifier on Monday night. The game drew over 13,000 spectators at the Videotron Centre.
Canada, ranked fifth in FIBA world rankings, remains undefeated in eight games and is set to face Uruguay in their next match on Nov. 26 in South America before a rematch with Argentina three days later. The top three teams from the two remaining America groups will secure spots in the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar, with the best fourth-place finisher also earning a trip to Doha.
Despite the standout performance of Argentina’s Nicolas Laprovittola, who scored 31 points, the only other Argentine player in double digits was Nicolas Brussino with 11 points. Dort, a Montreal native, made an impact early in the game with a crowd-rousing three-pointer, helping Canada to a 13-6 lead in the first quarter. Argentina rallied back and led 29-23 after the first quarter.
Argentina extended their lead to 17 points early in the second quarter, taking advantage of Dort’s absence due to foul trouble. However, Canada narrowed the gap to 53-48 by halftime, with head coach Gordie Herbert acknowledging the team’s effort in reducing the deficit before the break.
The Canadian team emerged more aggressive in the third quarter, outscoring Argentina 25-16, with veteran Kelly Olynyk’s dominant play under the basket pivotal for the home side. Alexander-Walker then stepped up in the final quarter, guiding Canada to victory.
Dort, playing his first game post-NBA playoffs, initially felt rusty but regained his form as the game progressed. Reflecting on his performance, Dort highlighted his preparation during the summer to ensure he was ready for competitive play.
