Dehcho Grand Chief Herb Norwegian has expressed concerns over the quality of healthcare in the region, noting instances where residents are given only basic treatment like Tylenol and questioned about alcohol consumption. The focus on improving healthcare in the Dehcho area has shifted towards enhancing staffing, equipment, and most importantly, building trust with residents.
Recent recommendations stemming from an investigation into the preventable deaths of three Dehcho residents in early 2025 have highlighted the need for a more patient-focused approach in healthcare. Norwegian emphasized the significance of recruitment efforts to retain medical staff in communities, acknowledging the complexities involved in achieving this goal.
The 18 recommendations put forward include defining staff roles, ensuring adequate staffing levels, and providing necessary medical equipment across healthcare facilities. However, Norwegian stressed that trust remains the key factor in healthcare delivery.
Elder Joachim Bonnetrouge from Fort Providence commended the quality of care in his community, attributing it to the long-standing relationships with dedicated medical staff. Norwegian highlighted the shortage of healthcare professionals in the region, suggesting the promotion of healthcare careers among local youth as a potential solution, albeit constrained by limited resources.
Encouraging residents to lead healthy lifestyles to reduce the need for medical intervention, Norwegian advised those in remote communities to prioritize their well-being. Jason Sutherland, a health services and policy expert, emphasized the challenges of providing healthcare in rural areas and supported the implementation of all 18 recommendations in the N.W.T.
Former health minister Julie Green expressed concerns about the lack of a concrete plan or accountability to act on the recommendations, urging the government to set clear priorities. While the health department anticipates providing more details on future steps, Green emphasized the importance of addressing staffing, supplies, and technology gaps in healthcare delivery.
