The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence this Saturday at Rogers Centre. Martinez, who recently concluded his broadcasting career after covering over 4,000 games, served the organization for nearly 40 years in various roles including player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude, Martinez described the induction as a significant honor that he had never anticipated during his active years in baseball. He acknowledged the Jays’ fans for their warm reception over the years, making him feel like part of their extended family. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style, featuring phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball” with his renowned American accent, Martinez revealed that these catchphrases evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010, drawing inspiration from his time in Milwaukee.

Reflecting on his transition into retirement, Martinez acknowledged the significant change after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, Martinez had to step away for health reasons following his second battle with cancer in 2025 (having been first diagnosed in 2022). He joyfully shared that he is currently cancer-free and in good health.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring key figures who have contributed to shaping the franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Notably, the current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence will also be part of this distinguished group, featuring iconic names like Jose Bautista, George Bell, and Roy Halladay.

Martinez, who initially felt like he was being “exiled” when he joined the Blue Jays in 1981, later came to appreciate the city and team’s immense support for baseball. He praised Toronto as a destination for players due to the fans’ passion for the Blue Jays. Reflecting on past World Series events, Martinez highlighted the memorable Game 7 and the exceptional team dynamics of the previous year’s championship.

Despite witnessing challenges faced by star players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Martinez emphasized the game’s difficulty, even for the most talented individuals.
